World Cup wonders and getting back to nature: a round up of June’s street paper covers

We’re halfway through 2018 already, and have seen some great street paper covers in the first half of the year.

June has been no exception, with some fantastic front pages to feast your eyes on – read on to see the highlights of this month.

Also this month, after a whopping 63 entries, we’ve also announced our Top 10 Nominees for Best Cover in the 2018 INSP Awards. Which covers from the past year made it? Take a look!

Cover Highlights:

The FIFA World Cup is well underway in Russia, and football features have spilled over into the front pages of street papers this month. Hus Forbi are hoping to see Denmark make it to the quarter finals with a victory over Croatia, and featured a cover story interview with Danish footballer William Kvist. Australia’s World Cup dreams may be over, but The Big Issue Australia were big supporters of their beloved Socceroos – as seen in their out-of-this-world cover! And although the USA didn’t make it to the finals this year, Real Change ran with a special edition exploring “The Real Football” – featuring stories about street soccer and gender pay gaps in the sport.

It’s been a green-fingered month amongst street papers too, with Mother Nature making her presence known across the covers. Apropos got to grips with gardening, and explored the difference urban gardens are making in Salzburg. Bees made a buzz on Asphalt‘s front page, as the German street paper investigated how the insects are seeking refuge in urban cities. And it was a bug’s life for The Big Issue (UK), as they reported how Britain’s creepy-crawly population are facing a battle for survival.

And green isn’t the only colour making a splash on the front pages. The rainbow flag has been flying with Real ChangeStreet Speech and StreetWise, as they celebrated Pride Month. Faktum continued the rainbow colours with a weather-themed cover, exploring the Swedish obsession with weather alongside meteorologist Nils Holmqvist. And Megaphone were “Living in Full Colour” with social activist Desmond Cole, who’s turned self-defence into a tour de force against racial discrimination, after a lifetime being judged for the skin he’s in.

Look back on our covers series here, and keep an eye out for the next round-up of covers coming at the end of next month.
