Vendor City Guide: Adelaide

My name is Daniel. I am 45 years old. I come from Enfield, SA. I became a Big Issue Australia vendor because it was getting harder to be a busker. I used to read Shakespeare and draw, but I wasn’t making much money. It has helped me pay for food, football tickets and life in general. I made lots of friends through The Big Issue, too.

What’s to like

I like the relaxed lifestyle in Adelaide. It is easy to get to the city and get around. Public transport is good. Adelaide has the best beaches and lots of good eateries.

Best cafes

I like good coffee, so I have lots of recommendations! Bean Bar on King William has the best coffee in the city. In Mitcham, Fifty 3 Cafe does the best coffee and Cafe Ambra the best smashed avo. At Mr Combs in Waymouth Street you can get a nice mocha, haircut and a shave in one go! I also like Cibo Espresso in Rundle Mall and Queen of Tarts in Hutt St.

Must-sees

Visitors should check out Adelaide Oval. There is always something happening there: footy, cricket, international concerts. You can do a tour and a roof climb. And Rundle St in the city is great for good cafes and restaurants. Other great places for tourists are Monarto Zoo and Cleland Wildlife Park. At Cleland you can hand-feed kangaroos.

On a budget

The Art Gallery of South Australia on North Terrace – it’s free and has lots of Indigenous art and modern art. I also like the Southern Cross Arcade in the CBD. There are good cheap international eateries; my favourite is the Korean shop, Seoul Express. Love the free Friday 5pm sausages in bread at the Torrens Arms hotel in Kingswood!

Out of the city

I like Port Adelaide because that’s where I go to do my art. There are a lot of art galleries, museums and nice old buildings. The shop owners and some people there know me, so I’m beginning to feel like a celebrity. Other good spots are Stirling and Handorf in the Adelaide Hills or even Port Lincoln if you have time and money to go a bit further out.

Best time to visit

It’s a toss-up for me between football season, the Fringe Festival and SALA Festival (it stands for South Australian Living Artists). I usually have some art in Fringe and SALA. SALA is the biggest open-access visual festival in the world, and runs in August, all over the state. The Fringe runs Feb-March. Football season for the local teams in the SANFL and the national AFL runs from March-Sept. There’s soccer from Oct-April. And I get into Street Soccer on Wednesdays in South Parklands. See you there!
