Reporting by Katherine Haines
The ongoing COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic continues to cause unprecedented disruption for the entire street paper network. This is especially true now as a second wave of the pandemic causes cities to enter into some of the strictest lockdowns since the initial outbreak.
December and January are traditionally important times for those who sell street papers. Marginalised communities – especially those without housing or an income – have to deal with harsher conditions, colder weather and greater demand for social services. The positivity in such a challenging period comes with increased footfall due to the festive season, which often sees street papers push out some of their best and most popular content in their publications, causing an upswing in sales for vendors.
Of course, this is no normal Christmas and New Year, and in many parts of the world that usual increase in sales may be subdued; in others, lockdown restrictions will mean vendors can’t sell magazines on the streets at all. However, street papers are stepping up to provide other opportunities for people to support them and, most importantly, their vendors. We’ve compiled a list of all the ways you can do this.
The links below take you to either digital editions or subscriptions of the street papers in our network, followed by links to online donation platforms and hardship funds set up to support vendors during these challenging times.
