Megaphone vendor Stephen: “25 for me is like a magic number”

INSP has been asking vendors from across the street paper network to write letters to their 25-year-old self to mark the end of INSP’s 25th anniversary year. Megaphone vendor Stephen is now 49 and selling the magazine in Vancouver, but he says that when he was 25, he was experiencing the best years of his life. Here, he explains why.

Stephen Scott

When I was 25 years old, that was the best year of my life.

I did lots of travelling in the United States and Canada; I did some modelling; I graduated from school and also opened my own cleaning business. I signed up many clients, including cleaning singer/songwriter Bryan Adams’ recording studio in Gastown and many houses in the British Properties in West Vancouver where they filmed [the television series] The X-Files.

When I was 25, I also met my partner and we are still together after 25 years.

I wish I could have stayed 25 years old forever; in my heart I still feel like I am. Even when I turned 30 and 40 years old, I still felt 25.

25 for me is like a magic number—one-quarter of my life passed.

I’m going to make the best of the time I have left and try to travel and stay positive. My advice to others, especially 25-year-olds, is to do the same and never give up on their dreams.

When I turn 50, my dream will come true, hopefully in May 2020 [Stephen has been a Megaphone vendor for nearly 10 years, and has managed to save enough money from sales over the last decade to finance a dream trip to Australia for he and his partner]. I will be able to travel to Australia to hold a koala bear and take a cruise to New Zealand. It will be a well-deserved trip, as I haven’t had a holiday in decades—almost since I was 25!
