Gorillaz – ‘On Melancholy Hill’
40-year-old Kine, who sells Sorgenfri outside the 7/11 in Nordre Gate, in Trondheim, Norway. She is also a musician who is inspired by the music of Blur frontman, and musical polymath, Damon Albarn’s animated band Gorillaz, specifically the track ‘On Melancholy Hill’ from the album Plastic Beach. “I guess I am a little melancholic myself. His voice is a bit monotone, but the choir lifts the whole performance up,” says Kine. “I guess for Albarn it means something else, but to me, it means that it’s possible to escape being addicted to drugs.
“When I saw Gorillaz on a livestreamed concert, they performed this song, and I thought to myself: ‘If Damon Albarn can get out of it, and he has, I can too’. He’s off drugs, he’s touring the world with his band, and he’s, what, 54 years old? I can quit this too! I was lying at home, crying, thinking ‘I’m gonna make it’. And I am well on my way now.”
