With the festive season in full swing and Christmas Day less than a week away, we take a moment to cast our eye over the street papers, calendars, books and other goodies on sale by vendors during December.
Christmas is the perfect opportunity for vendors to earn some additional income, and street papers often diversify over the holidays with bumper editions and extra products to give vendors the chance to maximise their earnings.
We’ve rounded up just some of the many great publications and products that have been on sale this month, and don’t forget you can still pick them up from vendors over the festive period.
Have a great Christmas, and look out for the first covers round-up on 2019 coming at the end of January!
Cover Highlights:
Snowmen, stars and Santa Claus himself – it wouldn’t be Christmas without street papers decking their covers with all things festive!
Calendars make for great Christmas gifts, and more and more street papers are producing eye-catching annual planners for vendors to upsell alongside their papers. Faktum‘s calendar featured letters from children in Gothenburg, talking about their understanding and perspective of homelessness. Sorgenfri collaborated with their local Trøndelag Theatre to produce a beautiful calendar featuring their vendors dressed in a variety of theatrical costumes. And Hus Forbi took inspiration from our #VendorPlaylist to produce a calendar featuring vendors showcasing their love of music and the instruments they play, cleverly designed to look like a retro vinyl. The additional income vendors make from the sales of these calendars can be crucial in helping them through the winter months.
The “Julebok” has been an annual tradition amongst our Norwegian street papers for many years, and 2018 has been no different. Sorgenfri, =Oslo and Megafon teamed up this year to produce their special Christmas book together, with different covers for each of the respective papers. This year, the theme was memorable encounters, and 60,000 copies were printed to be sold in Trondheim, Oslo and Bergen. And in the USA, Street Roots produced their 2018 Holiday Zine, this year entitled “I Am”, filled with poetry, short stories and artwork by their vendors.
Iso Numero produced a colourful set of Christmas postcards to be sold alongside their street paper, as a welcome boost to their vendors’ income in the lead up to the festive break. And The Curbside Chronicle brought back their Wrap Up Homelessness campaign for another year, giving vendors the chance to sell Christmas wrapping paper designed by local Oklahoma artists, including Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne.
As INSP HQ prepares to take a short break over the festive period, we’d like to send season’s greetings to our network of members and supporters around the world, and look forward to being in touch with you again in 2019!
