Covers Round-up: Up close and personal with August’s front pages

This month saw the 2018 Global Street Paper Summit return to INSP’s home city of Glasgow, and our golden annual opportunity to replenish the street paper archive and get up close and personal with covers from around the world.

The winners of the 2018 INSP Awards were announced as part of the Summit, and it was Mexican street paper Mi Valedor who took home the hotly-contested gong for Best Cover.

Mi Valedor’s homage to the golden age of Mexican cinema was a hit with the judging panel, who described it as ‘beautiful’ and ‘one of a kind’, and it has been Mi Valedor’s best-selling issue to date.

Will one of the following covers take home the prestigious title of Best Cover in 2019?

Cover Highlights:

Street papers have been championing their home cities and countries of their covers this month. Megaphone promoted local literacy, combining summer escapes in British Columbia with reading books from the province’s authors. Z! got to grips with getting around Amsterdam, with an edition about what to do in the city, as well as a handy map of the tram and metro systems enclosed. And StreetWise celebrated Chicago’s Riverwalk, sharing the highlights of what there is to do along the banks of the city’s rivers.

Musical icons made their way to the front pages of several street papers this month too. Bob Dylan took his ‘Never Ending Tour’ to Taiwan and Australia, and The Big Issue Australia and The Big Issue Taiwan took the opportunity to make him their cover star. 50 years on from his ’68 Comeback Special’, Elvis Presley graced the cover of both The Big Issue (UK) and Ireland’s Big Issue. And Faktum welcomed Swedish singer-songwriter Anna von Hausswolff as their August frontwoman.
