September’s street papers: The best of this month’s covers

As the seasons turn and the colder weather approaches, it’s more important than ever to stop and buy a street paper from your local vendor.

This month we flew the flag for street papers at Magfest, the central event of the inaugural Edinburgh International Magazine Festival, with a colourful display stand of street papers and covers. Read our coverage of the event here.

We also produced two vibrant new postcards, showcasing the INSP infographic and a spread of street paper covers:

Cover Highlights:

September has brought us some special occasions being celebrated within the network. zebra. marked their 50th edition and 5 years in print with an eponymous cover featuring a colourful zebra. You can read more about their celebrations here. It was a month of firsts for =Oslo, who produced their first ever illustrated cover to mark their first 100% vendor issue. And L’Itinéraire reached a landmark milestone of 25 years in print, with a special cover collage of past notable editions.

Planet Earth took centre stage on several covers this month. Lice v Lice dedicated an issue and cover to the global Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on the environmental protection and the future of the planet. The Big Issue Australia explored the “secret life of trees”, rooting out our relationship with trees, and their relationships with each other. And Hecho en Bs. As. produced a fiery cover, looking at the agribusiness behind the Amazon’s recent wildfires.

Pop culture lives up to its name and always proves popular when stars of TV, film and music feature on street paper front covers. With Sesame Street celebrating their 50th birthday in 2019, the story of the homeless Muppet Lily from The Big Issue Australia is still enjoying republications across the world, this month on the covers of One Step Away and The Curbside Chronicle. Downton Abbey has made it from the small screen to the silver screen, and The Big Issue (UK) celebrated the launch of the film with cover star Dame Maggie Smith. And StreetWise released their Fall Concert Guide, highlighting the stars performing in Chicago in the coming months.

Look back on our covers series here, and keep an eye out for the next round-up coming in late October.
