New Covers for a New Decade: A round-up of January 2020’s street paper front pages

A brand new year and a brand new decade bring with it a host of brand new street paper covers for January 2020.

Each month we bring you a round-up of front pages that have been sold on the streets by our vendors in 35 countries around the world.

We celebrate these hard-working vendors with a special, week-long celebration starting Monday – #VendorWeek. Check back next week to see all our coverage of the events taking place across the globe, and join the online conversation and celebrations using the hashtag on Twitter.

Until then – here’s our look at January’s cover highlights…

Cover Highlights:

The new year and new decade sparked a number of 2020-related covers. The Big Issue (UK) unveiled their Top 100 Changemakers for 2020 – listing the thinkers, creators and agitators who they believe are changing the world for the better this year. L’Itinéraire shone a spotlight on the year ahead, and looked at seven challenges the world faces in 2020. And Z! welcomed us to 2020 with coverage about the increasing number of people experiencing homelessness in the Netherlands, and hostile architecture in Amsterdam.

January brought with it some cause for celebration across the street paper network. Ireland’s Big Issue marked their 250th edition with a special issue and a collage of previous covers. FiftyFifty reached a mighty 25 years in print, and their birthday cake (or doughnut!) cover fronted an issue looking at the challenges still faced by people experiencing homelessness 25 years on. And Street Spirit also celebrated their 25th anniversary with some impressive cover art and a lead story by Founding Editor Terry Messman, reflecting on the mission and importance of the street paper 25 years later.

Street papers cover all sorts of issues relating to people of all ages. Strassenkreuzer ran with a cover story about Germany’s increasing number of retirement homes and the lack of nurses available to staff them. One Step Away led with a story about a local youth campaign, #WeAreNotARisk. And StreetWise published INSP’s #VendorLetters series, featuring vendors from around the world writing letters of reflection and advice to their 25-year-old selves.

Look back on our covers series here, and keep an eye out for the next round-up coming soon.
