We’re well into the swing of 2018 already, and February has brought us another month of quality covers from the street paper network around the world.
With entries for the 2018 INSP Awards opening very soon, has February delivered us any potential winners in the Best Cover category?
Read on to take a look at this month’s highlights…
Cover Highlights:
February saw another hugely successful #VendorWeek during the first week of the month, and a record 46 street papers from 24 countries took part in this year’s campaign. One of the highlights was the video montage that saw street papers being passed around the world by vendors, with lots of delightful covers on show.
Lots of street papers celebrated #VendorWeek in their February editions too. The Big Issue Australia ran a special ‘Letter to My Younger Self’ feature with letter from vendors to their teenage selves. Toledo Streets ran a cover story about their Vendor of the Year, Laurence Vollero. And L’Itinéraire held their first-ever Open Doors Day, welcoming in the general public to see how the magazine is produced. They also produced a fantastic behind-the-scenes video exclusively for INSP:
February also saw Black History Month marked by several street papers on their covers. Street Sense was at the unveiling of a community mural, and featured an essay from a vendor who was there. Real Change covered the unveiling of the ‘Everyday Black’ exhibition at the Northwest African-American Museum in Seattle. And Street Roots spoke to Tarana Burke, the woman behind the Me Too campaign – originally set up to support black girls – and her fears over the potential alienation of marginalised groups because of the hashtag’s recent explosion of mainstream use.
It’s been a sporting month for street paper covers around the world too. With the Winter Olympics taking place in Pyeongchang, The Contributor, StreetWise and Straatjournaal dedicated their covers to the winter athletes competing in the Games. And The Big Issue Japan‘s cover star was tennis ace Novak Djokovic, with a republication of Liceulice‘s interview from the News Service.
Look back on our covers series here, and keep an eye out for the next round-up of covers coming at the end of March.
