Covers Galore: Rounding-up August’s street paper front pages

As another month is coming to an end, and the September issues are beginning to hit the streets with our vendors, it’s a good time to take a look back on the street paper covers we’ve seen, admired and bought during August.

Read on for our round-up…

Cover Highlights:

Iso Numero published their first cartoons edition, filled with an eclectic mix of illustrated comics from around the world. Kralji Ulice broke convention and printed their first-ever full-colour front cover, bringing a bold splash of red, yellow and blue to the front and back pages. And Real Change and Fedél Nélkül celebrated their 25th and 10th birthdays respectively. You can read Real Change‘s interview with Founding Director Tim Harris here, reflecting on 25 years of the Seattle street paper.

It’s been a literary feast across the street paper network during August. Surprise followed up last month‘s summer fiction edition with a second instalment featuring several Swiss authors. Megaphone‘s annual summer book list threw up some suggested reads based on the theme of ‘memoirs’. And The Big Issue Australia produced their 15th annual bumper Fiction Edition, featuring 14 short stories chosen from 424 entries. Their Fiction Edition from last year scooped Best Special Edition at the 2019 INSP Awards.

Fish, fashion and festivals – the letter ‘F’ featured fairly frequently on front pages this month! The Curbside Chronicle‘s Fun Issue brought us a fresh, feelgood cover to leave a smile on our faces. Big Issue North fed us a flavourful Food Special, welcoming back TV’s The Great British Bake Off with last year’s finalist, Kim-Joy. And StreetWise followed up their Summer Festival Guide with their Fall Festival Guide, featuring a full list of forthcoming functions in Chicago.

Look back on our covers series here, and keep an eye out for the next round-up coming in late September.
